Job market talking points

The old saying that timing is everything may be very appropriate for the final six weeks of the year. Employers that have held off on actively recruiting for positions now face two options: fill them or lose them. Company budgets undergo review over the next few months and inactive job openings will get serious scrutiny. If a manager has gotten along for months with one or more open positions, the justification for filling the job(s) can become problematic. Since many managers already fought the budget battles to get or keep the positions they have slotted, the wiser course is to get active, develop some candidates and extend an offer, perhaps even set a start date prior to year end to assure the position is retained in the budget. Now through the end of 2006 will be busy, so keep your job seekers focused and motivated!

Job search successes

In July, a Michigan based company had an open position for a quality engineer with solid background in electronics and control systems. The hiring manager did not act on the need until October, when he contacted the staffing folks for help, who initiated the recruiting process. At the same time, an engineer job seeker made contact with a hiring manager of another company, who had just been contacted by a recruiter about the position noted. He referred the engineer to the recruiter, who presented the engineer as a candidate. The engineer starts November 27th. So a networking inquiry led to an introduction to a recruiter and a job offer. Persistence and patience produced a result that the engineer could not have anticipated. Good work!

Connecting with employers

Surveys of employers over the past year have been consistent: the number one employer problem is finding people with the skills and core competencies to meet the needs of the jobs available. Now is the time for your job seekers to review their resumes, confirm they have presented their backgrounds effectively, especially their core competencies, and keep active with their search process. Employment in the US is at record levels now, so job search successes for your group will hopefully develop over the next few months.
