Job market talking points

As the job market continues to improve, the areas of growth, and future shortages of skills are beginning to get the attention of the media. Here are some areas where you want to focus upon in advising your job seekers about career directions. The most recent BLS Report (April, 2006) indicates that financial services (banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, consumer credit) have added over 200,000 jobs so far this year. The second major growth area is health care, with additions in nursing, residential care facilities, hospitals, and medical care providers. A third area is professional services, such as computers and consulting. In your coaching/counseling role, consider pointing your job seekeers to where the job growth and emerging shortages are taking place this year.

Job search successes

Persistence pays. A job seeker was out of work for a period of time, decided to accept an offer that was less than half his former level. Six months later, an opportunity developed and he accepted an offer that closed the gap half way. Three months later, he landed an opportunity that enabled him to exceed his former compensation level, with a base and bonus about 20% above his prior level. So it took three jobs to get to where he wanted to be over a period of eighteen months.

Connecting with employers

Get a "meets specs." Company Human Resources folks are facing multiple demands on their time and resources for performance. As leaders of job support groups, we can help. Once we understand what a client company wants for an open position, we can get to work and find the right candidate. The specifications for the position provided by the client must drive the process for reviews of candidates and selection of one or more to present to the client. There are two rewards for getting it right. First, a satisfied company client who says, "This candidate meets the specs." Secondly, a satisfied job seeker gets a chance to connect with an employer with a job that matches up well to their background and interests. A win/win!

Best ideas in job search

Over the next few months, and again in the fall of this year, a number of job fairs will be offered by a variety of resources. For example, Work Ministry is affiliated with Career Concepts USA, which conducts about 300 job fairs nationwide. Job fairs are a very effective way for members of your group to connect with a few employers, get past the paper, calls and email routines to meet with a real person from a target company. Please make a practice of consulting your local papers for job fairs in your area and share the details with your group. A link to the website of Career Concepts USA and their calendar of events is available on our Resources & Links page.
